We usually think of pleasure as something physical, right? A good meal, a comfortable bed, a beautiful sunset. But what if true pleasure came from something else entirely? Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, whose teachings are recorded in Likutei Moharan, presents a radical idea: that the truly righteous person, the Tzaddik, finds their joy not in physical gratification, but in the radiant light shining through the Hebrew letters themselves (Likutei Moharan 1:19).

Think about that for a moment. The letters...glowing?

Now, this isn’t about simple calligraphy. It’s about something far deeper. Kabbalistic thought teaches us that the Hebrew letters are more than just symbols; they are the very building blocks of creation. The Zohar, that foundational text of Kabbalah, is filled with such ideas. According to basic kabbalistic doctrine, the way these letters interact within a word is directly connected to what that word represents. It's all interconnected.

Imagine every object in the world, from the smallest pebble to the tallest mountain, shimmering with an inner light, the light of its constituent Hebrew letters. Most of us go through life oblivious to this hidden reality. We see a table, we use it. We eat an apple, we enjoy its taste. But the Tzaddik? The Tzaddik sees more.

Rabbi Nachman suggests that the righteous, through their spiritual sensitivity, can actually perceive – even grasp – these luminous letters within the objects around them. The holy tongue, Hebrew (Lashon haKodesh), animates everything!

This isn't just a nice metaphor, either. It speaks to a profound understanding of reality. The Tzaddik, by connecting with these inner letters, is connecting with the very essence of creation. They are tapping into a source of pleasure and renewal that transcends the physical world.

So, what does this mean for us? Do we all need to become mystics to experience this radiant light? Perhaps not. But Rabbi Nachman’s teaching invites us to look beyond the surface, to see the world with new eyes, and to appreciate the hidden depths and spiritual potential within everything around us. Maybe, just maybe, we can catch a glimpse of that shining light ourselves.
