In Kabbalah, the ancient Jewish mystical tradition, there's a concept that speaks directly to this feeling: the idea that everything – every level of existence, every aspect of ourselves – goes through phases of immaturity and maturity.

This isn't just about growing up, though. It's about the constant dance of creation and revelation, the ebb and flow of divine energy. And it all starts, surprisingly, with Malkhut.

Now, Malkhut (מלכות) is often translated as "kingdom" or "kingship," and it represents the final Sefirah, or emanation, in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. Think of it as the vessel that receives and manifests all the divine light from above. But here's the twist: sometimes, Malkhut ascends. It moves upward, specifically to Bina (בינה), which represents understanding or intellect.

Why does this matter? Well, as the Introduction to the Sulam Commentary, particularly section 19, explains, this ascent triggers a fascinating shift. When Malkhut ascends to Bina, it essentially puts a pause on the flow of energy below Ḥokhma (חכמה), or wisdom.

What happens then? The commentary tells us that the Bina, Tiferet (תפארת, beauty), and Malkhut of that level essentially pack up and move on down to the level below. It's like a cosmic game of musical chairs!

So, what’s left behind? Only the vessels of Keter (כתר, crown) and Ḥokhma, along with the lights of ruaḥ (רוח, spirit) and nefesh (נפש, soul). The level is now lacking the first three lights, and this, my friends, is the phase of immaturity.

Think of it like a plant that hasn't fully bloomed yet. It has roots and a stem, but it's missing the vibrant colors and sweet fragrance of the flower. It has potential, but it's not quite there yet.

This phase of immaturity isn't a bad thing, though. It's a necessary step in the process of growth and development. It's a time of potential, a time of waiting, a time of preparation. And just as the plant eventually blooms, so too does each level eventually reach its phase of maturity. It’s a reassuring thought, isn’t it? That even when we feel incomplete, we are simply in a stage of becoming. We are in the process of reaching our full potential, just like everything else in the universe.
