Maybe the problem isn't your grasp, but your vessel.
In Kabbalah, the Petichah LeChokhmat HaKabbalah, which translates to "An Introduction to the Wisdom of Kabbalah," delves into this very idea, exploring how we receive and process the supernal light, the divine wisdom. It’s not just about wanting knowledge; it's about how we want it.
Think of it like this: at the first level of understanding, our vessel, our capacity to receive, becomes like Ḥokhma (Wisdom). We align ourselves with the light itself, the source of all giving. But what does that actually mean?
Imagine a cup overflowing. The cup is your vessel, and the water is the light. Initially, we might just want to fill the cup to the brim, soaking up all that wisdom for ourselves. But according to the Petichah, true reception happens when we develop a "will to give" to the Emanator, to the source of the light.
This "will to give" is key. When we cultivate this desire to share, to emanate the goodness we receive, something remarkable happens. A new light, the "light of giving," is drawn to us. This light isn't the same as the original light of wisdom. In fact, it's almost completely separate!
Why? Because, as the text emphasizes, the light of wisdom, that initial influx of understanding, can only be truly received in a vessel that embodies the "ultimate will to receive." That is, unless we have the intention to share and give, the light of wisdom cannot be fully received. That sounds counterintuitive, right?
It’s a paradox. To truly grasp wisdom, we need to move beyond simply wanting it for ourselves. We need to awaken that impulse to give, to share, to become a conduit for the divine light. Only then can we access a deeper level of understanding, a "light of giving" that transforms not just our knowledge, but our very being.
So, the next time you're seeking wisdom, ask yourself: What am I planning to do with it? Who will benefit from my understanding? Because maybe, just maybe, the key to unlocking the secrets of the universe lies not in taking, but in giving back.
