Weekly Torah Portions

The Torah is divided into 54 weekly portions (parshiyot), read in synagogues throughout the year. Explore ancient texts related to each portion.

Parshat Bereshit

Covers the creation of the world in six days, Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, the first sin, Cain and Abel, and the generations from Adam to Noah. Genesis 1:1-6:8.

Parshat Noach

The story of Noah and the great flood, the ark, the covenant of the rainbow, the Tower of Babel, and the generations from Noah to Abraham. Genesis 6:9-11:32.

Parshat Lech Lecha

God calls Abraham to leave his homeland for Canaan. Covers Abraham and Sarah in Egypt, the separation from Lot, the war of the kings, and the covenant between the pieces.

Parshat Vayera

Three angels visit Abraham, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, the birth of Isaac, and the Binding of Isaac (the Akedah). Genesis 18:1-22:24.

Parshat Chayei Sarah

The death and burial of Sarah, Abraham sends his servant to find a wife for Isaac, and Rebekah joins the family. Genesis 23:1-25:18.

Parshat Toldot

The birth of Jacob and Esau, Esau sells his birthright, Isaac and the Philistines, and Jacob receives Isaac's blessing through deception. Genesis 25:19-28:9.

Parshat Vayetzei

Jacob's dream of the ladder to heaven, his years working for Laban, his marriages to Rachel and Leah, and the birth of the twelve tribes. Genesis 28:10-32:3.

Parshat Vayishlach

Jacob wrestles with the angel, his reunion with Esau, the incident at Shechem, Rachel's death, and the genealogy of Esau. Genesis 32:4-36:43.

Parshat Vayeshev

Joseph's dreams and his brothers' jealousy, Joseph sold into slavery, Judah and Tamar, and Joseph in Potiphar's house and prison. Genesis 37:1-40:23.

Parshat Miketz

Pharaoh's dreams, Joseph's rise to power in Egypt, the famine, and the brothers' first journey to Egypt. Genesis 41:1-44:17.

Parshat Vayigash

Judah's plea for Benjamin, Joseph reveals himself to his brothers, and Jacob's family descends to Egypt. Genesis 44:18-47:27.

Parshat Vayechi

Jacob blesses his sons and grandsons with prophetic blessings, Jacob's death and burial, and Joseph's final years. Genesis 47:28-50:26.

Parshat Shemot

The Israelites' enslavement in Egypt, the birth of Moses, Moses at the burning bush, and God's call to liberate His people. Exodus 1:1-6:1.

Parshat Vaera

God reveals His name to Moses, the first seven plagues strike Egypt, and Pharaoh's heart is hardened. Exodus 6:2-9:35.

Parshat Bo

The final three plagues including the death of the firstborn, the first Passover, and the Exodus from Egypt. Exodus 10:1-13:16.

Parshat Beshalach

The splitting of the Red Sea, the Song of the Sea, the miracle of manna, water from the rock, and the battle against Amalek. Exodus 13:17-17:16.

Parshat Yitro

Jethro visits Moses, the revelation at Mount Sinai, and the giving of the Ten Commandments. Exodus 18:1-20:23.

Parshat Mishpatim

A collection of civil and criminal laws covering slavery, damages, lending, and the covenant ceremony at Sinai. Exodus 21:1-24:18.

Parshat Terumah

Detailed instructions for building the Tabernacle, the Ark of the Covenant, the menorah, and the altar. Exodus 25:1-27:19.

Parshat Tetzaveh

The priestly garments for Aaron, the consecration of the priests, and the daily offerings on the altar. Exodus 27:20-30:10.

Parshat Ki Tisa

The census, the golden calf, Moses breaks the tablets, God's thirteen attributes of mercy, and the second set of tablets. Exodus 30:11-34:35.

Parshat Vayakhel

The people bring offerings for the Tabernacle, Bezalel and the craftsmen begin construction. Exodus 35:1-38:20.

Parshat Pekudei

The completion of the Tabernacle, the priestly garments, and the glory of God filling the Tabernacle. Exodus 38:21-40:38.

Parshat Vayikra

The laws of burnt offerings, meal offerings, peace offerings, sin offerings, and guilt offerings brought in the Tabernacle. Leviticus 1:1-5:26.

Parshat Tzav

Further instructions for the priests on sacrificial procedures, the consecration of Aaron and his sons. Leviticus 6:1-8:36.

Parshat Shemini

The inauguration of the Tabernacle, the death of Nadab and Abihu, and the laws of kosher animals. Leviticus 9:1-11:47.

Parshat Tazria

Laws of ritual purity after childbirth and the diagnosis and treatment of tzaraat (skin afflictions). Leviticus 12:1-13:59.

Parshat Metzora

The purification process for one afflicted with tzaraat and laws regarding impurity in houses. Leviticus 14:1-15:33.

Parshat Acharei Mot

The Yom Kippur service, the scapegoat ritual, laws against consuming blood, and forbidden relationships. Leviticus 16:1-18:30.

Parshat Kedoshim

The holiness code: love your neighbor, respect parents, keep Shabbat, honest dealings, and ethical commandments. Leviticus 19:1-20:27.

Parshat Emor

Laws for the priests, the festivals and holy days of the Jewish calendar, and the incident of the blasphemer. Leviticus 21:1-24:23.

Parshat Behar

The sabbatical year, the jubilee year, laws of land ownership, and the prohibition against usury. Leviticus 25:1-26:2.

Parshat Bechukotai

The blessings for following God's laws, the curses for disobedience, and laws of vows and valuations. Leviticus 26:3-27:34.

Parshat Bamidbar

The census of the Israelites in the wilderness, the arrangement of the tribal camps, and the duties of the Levites. Numbers 1:1-4:20.

Parshat Naso

The census of the Levites, the sotah ritual, the Nazirite vow, the priestly blessing, and tribal offerings. Numbers 4:21-7:89.

Parshat Behaalotecha

The lighting of the menorah, the Levites' consecration, the silver trumpets, complaints about manna, and Miriam's punishment. Numbers 8:1-12:16.

Parshat Shelach

The twelve spies sent to Canaan, the people's rebellion, God's decree of forty years of wandering, and the laws of tzitzit. Numbers 13:1-15:41.

Parshat Korach

Korach's rebellion against Moses and Aaron, the earth swallows the rebels, and Aaron's staff blossoms. Numbers 16:1-18:32.

Parshat Chukat

The red heifer purification ritual, the deaths of Miriam and Aaron, Moses strikes the rock, and the bronze serpent. Numbers 19:1-22:1.

Parshat Balak

King Balak hires Balaam to curse Israel, the talking donkey, and Balaam's blessings instead of curses. Numbers 22:2-25:9.

Parshat Pinchas

Pinchas's zealous act, the second census, the daughters of Zelophehad, Joshua appointed as Moses's successor, and the festival offerings. Numbers 25:10-30:1.

Parshat Matot

Laws of vows, the war against Midian, and the settlement of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh east of the Jordan. Numbers 30:2-32:42.

Parshat Masei

A review of the Israelites' forty-two journeys through the wilderness, the borders of the Promised Land, and cities of refuge. Numbers 33:1-36:13.

Parshat Devarim

Moses's farewell address begins with a review of the journey from Sinai, the appointment of judges, and the scouts' mission. Deuteronomy 1:1-3:22.

Parshat Vaetchanan

Moses pleads to enter the Land, the repetition of the Ten Commandments, the Shema prayer, and warnings against idolatry. Deuteronomy 3:23-7:11.

Parshat Eikev

Promises of blessing for obedience, the description of the Land of Israel, remembering the golden calf, and the second tablets. Deuteronomy 7:12-11:25.

Parshat Reeh

A central place of worship, laws against false prophets, kosher laws, tithes, and the three pilgrimage festivals. Deuteronomy 11:26-16:17.

Parshat Shoftim

Laws of judges and officers, the king, the Levitical priests, true and false prophets, cities of refuge, and warfare. Deuteronomy 16:18-21:9.

Parshat Ki Teitzei

Seventy-four commandments covering family law, honest business practices, treatment of workers, and remembering Amalek. Deuteronomy 21:10-25:19.

Parshat Ki Tavo

The ceremony of first fruits, the tithes declaration, blessings and curses on Mount Gerizim and Ebal. Deuteronomy 26:1-29:8.

Parshat Nitzavim

The covenant renewed, the choice between life and death, and the promise that Torah is accessible to all. Deuteronomy 29:9-30:20.

Parshat Vayelech

Moses's final day, the commandment of Hakhel (public Torah reading), and the prediction of Israel's future rebellion. Deuteronomy 31:1-31:30.

Parshat Haazinu

Moses's great song reviewing God's faithfulness and Israel's rebellions, and God tells Moses to ascend Mount Nebo. Deuteronomy 32:1-32:52.

Parshat Vezot Haberakhah

Moses's final blessings to each tribe, his death on Mount Nebo, and the transition of leadership to Joshua. Deuteronomy 33:1-34:12.
