It’s a question that has driven mystics for centuries, and it all boils down to understanding the difference between potential and actuality.
Baal HaSulam, in his preface to the Zohar, that foundational text of Jewish mysticism, gives us a profound analogy to grasp this. He explains that when we speak of Ein Sof and the world of Atzilut (the realm of emanation), we're talking about pure potential. Think of it like this: you have an idea for a house. It's all in your mind – the number of rooms, the layout, the color of the walls. But there's no actual wood, no bricks, no concrete. It's just a concept.
Atzilut, in this analogy, is the divine blueprint. It's the realm where everything exists in its most perfect, unmanifested form. Everything is still within the realm of the Divine, untouched by the limitations of creation.
But what about our world? That's where things get interesting. Baal HaSulam explains that the three worlds of Beria (creation), Yetzira (formation), and Asiya (action) – along with our own physical world – represent the actualization of that potential. It's like taking that idea for a house and actually building it. You need wood, bricks, laborers, and a whole lot of effort to transform the idea into something tangible.
And here's the key: In these lower worlds, the Divinity – the light and energy that flows from Ein Sof – is enclothed in what we call the ten Sefirot: Keter, Ḥokhma, Bina, Ḥesed, Gevura, Tiferet, Netzaḥ, Hod, Yesod, and Malkhut. These are often translated as crown, wisdom, understanding, loving-kindness, strength, beauty, victory, splendor, foundation, and kingdom. Think of the Sefirot as vessels or filters. They shape and direct the divine light so it can interact with our reality.
Why is this important? Because, according to Baal HaSulam, these vessels are not Divine in themselves. They are "novel creations formed for the sake of the souls." They are created so that souls can eventually come to their state of completion. This is a huge idea. It means that the very structure of reality is designed to help us, as souls, grow and evolve.
So, the next time you marvel at the beauty of the world, remember that it's not just a random collection of matter and energy. It’s a carefully constructed system designed to allow us to connect with the infinite, to move from potential to actuality, and to ultimately fulfill our purpose. It’s a story written in light and vessels, waiting for us to read it.
