Today, we're cracking open a small but fascinating piece of that puzzle from the Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah, which translates roughly to "138 Openings of Wisdom." It deals with a central figure called Zeir Anpin and the "Mental Powers" that animate him.
Now, Zeir Anpin – which means "Small Face" or "Short Countenance" – is a complex concept. Think of him as a kind of intermediary between the higher, more abstract realms of the Divine and our own world. In Kabbalistic terms, he's often associated with the six Sefirot, or divine attributes: Chessed (Loving-Kindness), Gevurah (Strength/Judgment), Tiferet (Beauty/Harmony), Netzach (Victory/Endurance), Hod (Splendor/Majesty), and Yesod (Foundation). These six qualities, according to this text, are the very essence of Zeir Anpin.
Why these six? Because Zeir Anpin's job, so to speak, is to be the root of all creation in our world. He sustains it. He governs it. And, according to the Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah, he does all of this through these Six Directions – Chessed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Netzach, Hod, and Yesod. They are his tools, his building blocks.
But here's where it gets even more interesting. These "Mental Powers" we're talking about… they don't originate within Zeir Anpin himself. They exist in him, says the text, because of the way Abba and Imma are "grafted" into him.
Who are Abba and Imma? In Kabbalah, they are often understood as the archetypal Father and Mother, representing Wisdom and Understanding respectively. They're higher sefirot, influencing Zeir Anpin. So, the power that drives Zeir Anpin, the very force that allows him to sustain and govern creation, isn't intrinsic to him. It flows through him, originating from these higher sources.
It's like a conduit, or a prism, taking in light and refracting it into different colors. Zeir Anpin, in this analogy, is the prism, and Abba and Imma are the source of the light.
The Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah emphasizes that the body – and by extension, all of creation – is entirely governed by these Mental Powers. It suggests a profound interconnectedness.
