And it all starts with a story of cosmic proportions.

We're talking about Tzimtzum (צמצום), the primordial contraction. The idea that God, in order to make space for creation, withdrew a part of Himself. But the story doesn't end there.

After the Tzimtzum, something new emerges: the Kav Hamiddah (קו המדה), the "Line of Measurement." It's also known by another intriguing name: Boutzina d’Kardunita (בוצינא דקרדוניתא), the "torch of darkness." Think of it as the power to draw boundaries, to define limits. This concept comes to us from the mystical text, Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah.

Now, why is this "torch of darkness" so important? Because, according to this mystical understanding, the Tzimtzum brought something entirely new into existence: deficiency. Before the contraction, there was only perfection, wholeness. But afterwards? Lack became a part of the cosmic equation.

This "Line of Measurement" is the underlying power of Judgment, revealed precisely through the Tzimtzum. It’s the force, if you will, that brings about concealment, void, and emptiness. It’s the reason we experience all kinds of deficiencies in the world, a reality we all know too well.

It sounds a little bleak, doesn't it? But consider this: without boundaries, without definition, could anything truly exist? A painting needs a canvas. A song needs a structure. Creation itself required a space, a defined area, to take form.

So, the next time you feel that sense of lack, that nagging feeling that something is missing, remember the Kav Hamiddah. Remember that even deficiency, even the "torch of darkness," plays a crucial role in the grand tapestry of existence. Perhaps, it's not about eliminating lack, but understanding its purpose. Maybe, just maybe, it's the very thing that allows us to appreciate the wholeness we already possess.
