The Well of the Princes Dug by Moses and Aaron's Staff

Midrash Aggadah, Numbers 21:18

"Which the nobles of the people delved" (Numbers 21:18) — this is Moses and Aaron, when Miriam died, as it is said, "Take the staff and assemble the [congregation], etc." (Numbers 20[:8]). "With the lawgiver" — this is Moses; and through Moses came the matters, for he is called "lawgiver," as it is said, "for there a portion of the lawgiver was reserved" (Deuteronomy 33:21). "With their staves" — this is the staff that belonged to Moses and to Aaron. And from where do we know that it was Aaron's? As it is said, "Say to Aaron, take your staff" (Exodus 7:19); and it says, "Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the earth" (Exodus 8:12). "And from the wilderness, Mattanah" — a gift that He gave them in a land of desert and pit, a place of thirst where they had no water, and He brought forth for them water from the flinty rock.
