The Two Revelations to Elkanah and the Man of God Who Came to Eli

Midrash Shmuel 8:1

"And there came a man of God unto Eli" — this is Elkanah — "and said unto him: Thus saith the Lord: Did I reveal Myself indeed [unto the house of thy father]" (1 Samuel 2:27) — this is Elkanah. Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai taught: When a person goes into exile from Judah to the Galilee, or from the Galilee to Judah, this is not called exile; but when he goes into exile from the Land to outside the Land, he is called an exile. Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachman said: "Did I reveal Myself indeed" — two revelations did I reveal: one to bring your children out of Egypt, and one to give the priesthood to your children, and you rebel against Me. Rabbi and Rabbi Yonatan and Rabbi Tanchuma and Rabbi Yudah and Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish and Rabbi Avin and Rabbi Chiyya in the name of Rabbi Yonatan: In two places we find that the impure One purified Himself for the sake of the honor of the righteous one. In Egypt, where did He reveal Himself to him? Rabbi Berechiah in the name of Rabbi Chelbo: from within the palace of Pharaoh. And in Midian, where did He reveal Himself to him? Rav Huna in the name of Rav Acha: from within the hollow of the pillar. He said to it: If one boil were to rise upon any of your limbs, would not all your limbs feel it? So too: "Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord" (Jeremiah 23:24).
