Judith, after captivating Holofernes with her beauty and wit, finds herself alone with him in his tent. The feast has been long, the wine has flowed freely, and the mighty general lies in a drunken stupor on his bed. The Book of Judith tells us "they were all weary because the feast had been long. And Judith was left alone in the tent with Holofernes lying by himself on his bed, for he was filled with wine."
Pause for a moment and imagine the scene. The air is thick with the smell of wine and the tension is palpable. Judith, a woman alone in the heart of the enemy camp, faces an impossible choice.
But Judith is not truly alone. She had instructed her maid to wait outside, near her room. "Judith had commanded her maid to stand outside her bedroom and to wait for her to go forth, as she did daily; for she said she would go forth to her prayers," the text says. This detail is crucial. It underscores Judith's meticulous planning and her commitment to maintaining the appearance of piety, even in this most treacherous situation.
"So everyone left and no one was left in the bedroom, neither little nor great." Judith is alone with the sleeping general.
Then, the moment of truth. Judith, standing by his bed, offers a silent prayer. What does she pray for? Not for her own safety, but for the salvation of her people. "O Lord God of all power, look at this time upon the works of my hands for the exaltation of Jerusalem."
Notice the language. "Exaltation of Jerusalem." This isn’t just about survival; it's about restoring the glory and honor of her people, of the Klal Yisrael, the community of Israel. It is about God being seen as powerful.
