Our journey centers on Zeir Anpin, often visualized as the "Lesser Countenance" or the "Son" in Kabbalistic symbolism. Think of it as the active, expressive force in the cosmos. Now, according to Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah, the inner, mental powers (the Interior Mental Powers) infuse themselves into the nine Sefirot of Zeir Anpin. Sefirot, remember, are the ten emanations of God's light, acting as channels for divine energy to flow into creation.
And here's where it gets interesting: this infusion is represented by the Hebrew letter Tzaddi, whose numerical value is 90. Why 90? Because it signifies the way these mental powers spread into the nine Sefirot, directing and guiding them. Think of it as the blueprint, the internal software running the system.
But not everything gets distributed equally. The text tells us that what remains "outside" are the letters Lamed and Mem. Lamed, with a value of 30, represents Chessed (Kindness), Gevurah (Judgment), and Tiferet (Beauty/Mercy). Mem, at 40, embodies Keter (Crown), Chochmah (Wisdom), Binah (Understanding), and Daat (Knowledge).
Now, why don't these spread into the ten Sefirot of Zeir Anpin like the powers signified by Tzaddi? Because, as the text explains, these remain as complete entities. They don’t need to be broken down and dispersed. Instead, they stand as whole, unified forces, albeit still structured according to the principle of Kindness-Judgment-Mercy.
As we find in Midrash Rabbah, these attributes are fundamental building blocks of reality itself. Chessed, Gevurah, and Tiferet clearly operate on this basis. But what about Keter, Chochmah, Binah, and Daat? Here, the intermediary, Daat, divides into two aspects: an upper one, Keter, representing the ultimate source, and a lower one, Daat itself, which embodies both kindnesses and strengths. So, what does this all mean? It suggests a hierarchical structure within the divine emanations. Some aspects, like those represented by Tzaddi, permeate and direct the active forces of creation (Zeir Anpin). Others, signified by Lamed and Mem, remain more foundational, acting as stable pillars upon which the entire structure rests. They are the unmoving movers, the essential qualities that underpin all of existence.
