And at the heart of that system? The Sefirot.
Now, the Sefirot (singular: Sefirah) are often described as the ten emanations or attributes through which the Divine reveals itself. Think of them as lenses through which we can glimpse the Infinite. But according to the ancient text Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah, they’re more than just attributes. They’re a fundamental order, a blueprint that permeates all of existence.
This text lays out a pretty mind-bending idea: that absolutely everything—every function, every category, every distinction we can possibly make—is ultimately governed by the order of these ten Sefirot. It’s a bold claim, isn’t it?
The text breaks down this proposition into two parts. The first part insists that all the various kinds of functions found within the Sefirot are, without exception, governed by this very order of ten. It’s like saying that every single program running on your computer, no matter how different, is still operating within the framework of the same operating system.
Think of it this way: each Sefirah itself divides into ten more Sefirot. And within each of those, another ten! It’s Sefirot all the way down! According to Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah, each Sefirah and every part of each Sefirah contains the entire order of governance. The only difference is that, in any given case, the particular Sefirah in question will have more influence. It’s like saying that while every instrument in an orchestra contributes to the overall sound, sometimes the violins take the lead, and other times it's the trumpets.
So, no matter where we look, we’re always going to find these ten divisions corresponding to the ten Sefirot. Even when the lights – and here, "lights" is often a Kabbalistic term for divine energy or influence – need to divide in other ways to do their job, everything still has to fit within this tenfold division.
Essentially, the text is saying that even when things seem to break down into different levels or categories, they ultimately all come together to make up a total of ten levels. Each of the different levels divides into its own individual levels, but overall they make up a total of ten levels. It all comes back to the fundamental structure of the ten Sefirot.
It’s a powerful and somewhat daunting idea. That everything, from the smallest particle to the grandest cosmic event, is ultimately shaped by this one, overarching order. It invites us to see the world not as a collection of disparate parts, but as an interconnected whole, guided by a hidden harmony. And who knows, maybe by understanding this hidden order, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the universe. What do you think?
