It’s a question that’s kept mystics busy for centuries. to a concept that tries to explain just that: the Kav, or Line, of the Eyn Sof.

Now, Eyn Sof, blessed be He, is the Infinite, the ultimate unknowable source of everything. How does such an unbounded force interact with our finite reality? That’s where the Line comes in. According to the Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah, this Line of the Infinite enters into what's called the "Residue." What's the Residue? It's the empty space left after the Tzimtzum, the cosmic contraction where God, in essence, made room for creation. Think of it as the blank canvas upon which reality is painted.

This Line, the Kav, doesn't just barge in. It's concealed within the Residue, governing it from the inside, at all its levels. It's like the software running a computer, present and essential, but not always visible. But here's the twist: it also stands outside the Residue, encompassing it. It's the software, and the programmer, and the entire network the computer is connected to!

It includes the Residue's power, it watches over it, but it also accommodates itself to it. Imagine trying to pour an ocean into a teacup. The ocean has to, in a sense, limit itself, to fit. That's what the Line of the Eyn Sof does. This is the Inner and Encompassing Light of the Sefirot, the emanations of the Divine, that form the very foundation of our Vessels – our capacity to receive divine light.

Think of it like this: the Eyn Sof is a boundless ocean of light. The Tzimtzum creates a vessel, a container, but that container is still within the ocean. The Line, the Kav, is the way the ocean interacts with the container, filling it but also remaining the ocean.

So, we've talked about the Line entering this empty Space. But how does it actually spread within it? That, my friends, is a question for another time. For now, let's sit with the wonder of this image: the Infinite, both contained and uncontained, shaping and being shaped, in a dance of creation that continues to this very moment. Can you feel it?
