The Father Who Spares the Rod and Calls It Love

Midrash Mishlei 13:4

(Proverbs 13:24): "He who spares his rod hates his son." Now is there really a man who hates his son?! Rather, because he does not rebuke him concerning matters of wisdom and proper conduct, he is called one who hates; but the one who rebukes his son concerning wisdom and proper conduct, he is called one who loves him, as it is said, "But he who loves him disciplines him early" (Proverbs 13:24). Rabbi Eliezer says: Because the Holy One, blessed be He, loves Israel, He chastises them in this world through subjugation to the kingdoms, so that there may be atonement for them in the time to come. This is the meaning of what is written, "But he who loves him disciplines him early."
