David's Talent-Heavy Crown and the Loadstone That Held It

Midrash Shmuel 27:4

"And David gathered all the people and went to Rabbah, etc." (2 Samuel 12:29). "And he took the crown of their king, etc., and its weight was a talent of gold and a precious stone, and it was upon David's head" (2 Samuel 12:30). But does it not crush the head? A loadstone was in it that held it up over his head. Rav Huna in the name of Rav Yosef said: a precious stone was in it worth a talent of gold. And similar to it: "And the man took a golden nose-ring, a beka its weight" (Genesis 24:22). Rabbi Yehoshua said: a precious stone was in it whose weight was a beka. And similar to it: "And Mordecai went out from before the king, etc." (Esther 8:15), "and a great crown of gold." Rabbi Chiya bar Yosef said: its value was double.
