The King's Timepiece Handed to His Son in This Month

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Bo 12:1

Another interpretation of (Exodus 12:2) "This month": Rabbi Joshua ben Levi said, To what is the matter comparable? To a king who had a timepiece, and he would look at it and know which hour of the day it was. He did nothing, but when his son reached his maturity, he said to him: My son, until now this timepiece has been in my hand; from now on it is handed over to you. So too the Holy One, blessed be He, used to sanctify the new moons and intercalate the years. When Israel arose, He said to them: Until now the reckoning of the months and of the years has been in My hand; from here onward, behold, they are handed over to you, as it is said (Exodus 12:2), "This month shall be for you."
