There is a story about a certain man who was gathering in wine and oil, but he did not take out his tithes as was fitting. What did the Holy One, blessed be He, do to him? He put a spirit of madness (that is, an evil spirit) into him, and he took up the staff and began to smash the jars. A member of his household rebuked him. What did he do to him? He took the staff and split open his head. He said to him: Instead of helping me, you are rebuking me? He said to him: Give me the staff and I will smash. He gave him the staff. The one was breaking one, the other was breaking two. What brought this upon him? Because he had not taken out his tithes as was fitting.
The Man Who Withheld Tithes and Smashed His Own Wine and Oil Jars
