The Angel Who Came Up from Gilgal to Bochim

Yalkut Shimoni on Nach 40:1

"And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim" (Judges 2:1). But was it not Phinehas? Rabbi Simon said: At the hour when the holy spirit rested upon him, his face would blaze like torches [so that he was called an angel]. And the Rabbis say: What did the wife of Manoah say to him? "A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like the appearance of an angel of God" (Judges 13:6) - she supposed him to be a prophet, yet he was only an angel. And similar to this: "And Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke in the LORD's message" (Haggai 1:13) [where a prophet is called a messenger]. And similar to this: "And He sent a messenger and brought us out of Egypt" (Numbers 20:16). And similar to this: "But they mocked the messengers of God" (2 Chronicles 36:16) [in each case a human prophet is named a messenger or angel].
