Israel Sabba, Israel the Elder, and Tevunah, Understanding, are higher partzufim, divine configurations that emerge as the lower seven of Bina. These configurations represent different aspects of the divine personality, with Israel Sabba carrying the seasoned-elder character and Tevunah carrying the active-understanding character.

When Zeir Anpin needs new Mental Powers, an upgrade, Israel Sabba and Tevunah get involved in the coupling process. The Ramchal is careful about the language. Coupling in Kabbalah refers to divine union, a process of interaction and integration between different aspects of God. Israel Sabba and Tevunah do not just pass along information from Abba and Imma, the archetypal Father and Mother. They actively join Abba and Imma as the coupling happens. The result is a unified partzuf that includes all four configurations operating together.

The treatise then notes a refinement. If Israel Sabba and Tevunah are already functioning within Zeir Anpin, almost clothed within him, then this intense coupling is not required. In that configuration, they are channeling influence from Abba and Imma through an already-established pipeline. The active coupling is needed only when a new Mental Powers update is required.

What the foundational forces actually do

Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah 128:1 identifies the forces the whole partzuf system runs on. Chesed, Din, and Rachamim. Kindness, Judgment, and Mercy. According to the treatise, these three form the very foundation of cosmic order. They cannot be any less than three because they encompass the entire governmental order.

The Ramchal frames this through an everyday analogy. Imagine a just society. Can it survive on kindness alone? Probably not. There needs to be a framework of rules, Din, to ensure fairness. But pure unyielding judgment? That is a recipe for tyranny. So enters Rachamim, mercy, the tempering force that allows for nuance, forgiveness, and a balanced and compassionate world.

The treatise then elaborates with the figures of Abba and Imma. They represent the divine intellect and understanding. They are further divided into Israel Sabba and Tevunah, which represent the more developed expressions of the same intellectual forces. The Kabbalistic tradition treats this division as a structural articulation of how wisdom and understanding express themselves at different levels.

How the coupling maintains the three forces

The coupling is the structural maintenance that keeps the three in working balance.

Why the layered partzufim need each other

The Ramchal's picture is collaborative across multiple layers. Abba and Imma at one level. Israel Sabba and Tevunah at another. Zeir Anpin below them, receiving the Mental Powers updates. Each layer has its specific function. None of them can perform the work of the others. The system requires all of them to maintain its operating condition.

The reader is invited to feel the structural elegance. The divine system is not a single monolithic source. It is a coordinated team of configurations each performing their specific functions. The coordination is what produces the cosmic outputs the reader experiences as divine influence in their own life.

How the reader engages with this structure

The Ramchal's practical implication is direct. The reader is invited to think about the wisdom they engage with in their own life as something that needs collaboration. Information passively received from a source does not produce the same Mental Powers as wisdom actively engaged with. The reader who wants new Mental Powers, a creativity boost, a fresh perspective, must actively engage rather than passively absorb.

The cosmic structure offers the model. Abba and Imma do not just emit wisdom that flows downward. They couple with Israel Sabba and Tevunah, who actively participate. The team produces the Mental Powers together. The reader's own intellectual growth, in the Ramchal's analogous framing, follows the same pattern.

What the team configuration leaves for the reader

The two passages leave the reader with one composite picture. Abba and Imma at the top. Israel Sabba and Tevunah actively joining the coupling. Zeir Anpin receiving Mental Powers updates. Chesed, Din, and Rachamim being continuously maintained through the team coupling.
