It’s a feeling that's echoed through the ages, and it's something that the ancient Jewish mystics grappled with too. They sought to find the thread that ties it all together, the underlying unity beneath the surface of apparent chaos.
And what did they find? It all comes back to the Name. Specifically, the most sacred Name of God: HaVaYaH. You might know it as the Tetragrammaton, the four Hebrew letters (Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh) that we often pronounce as Adonai, out of reverence.
But why this Name? What makes it so special?
Well, the Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah, a profound Kabbalistic text, tells us that our essential purpose, our service in this world, is deeply connected to HaVaYaH. Think of it as the linchpin, the central axis around which everything else revolves. Even the “chariots” – those powerful, symbolic forces described in Ezekiel’s vision – are ultimately governed by this Name.
Now, Ezekiel's vision is wild. Four Chayot (חַיּוֹת), often translated as “living creatures” or “beasts,” each with multiple faces and wings, surrounded by swirling wheels within wheels. It’s intense imagery! According to the Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah, these Chayot, along with everything else in Ezekiel's vision, are all part of the order established by the Name HaVaYaH.
The text goes on to say that this Name is in control of everything else. Why? Because all the other "trees" – think of them as different pathways or channels of divine influence – are pathways of governance that exist because of the "Residue" that remained after creation. (That’s a whole other story for another time, involving divine contraction and the shattering of vessels… but stick with me!)
The important thing to remember is that the underlying bond, the thing that brings all these pathways into unity, is the Tree of the Name HaVaYaH. It’s the superglue holding the cosmos together, so to speak.
Through this Name, the “Cause of all causes” – we’re talking about God here – reveals His unity. It binds all those pathways of governance into a single pathway. And here's the really part: through this process, evil actually reverts to good. Think of it as a cosmic recycling program, turning what seems negative into something positive.
This is the order through which God asserts His unity over all the different orders, joining them together in the mystery of that unity. And at this level, the text says, there's no division between Kindness and Judgment. Everything is equally good. No more opposing forces, no more push and pull. Just pure, unadulterated goodness.
So, what does this mean for us? I think it reminds us that even when things seem fragmented and chaotic, there's an underlying unity. A divine order, governed by the Name HaVaYaH, working to bring everything back into harmony. It's an invitation to seek that unity within ourselves, within our communities, and within the world around us. To remember that even in the face of division, there's always a thread of connection, a pathway back to the Source. And maybe, just maybe, that’s where we find true peace.
