The Blood Marked Only Your Own Doorposts in Egypt

Mekhilta DeRabbi Shimon Ben Yochai 12:13

"And the blood shall be for you" (Exodus 12:13) - for you and not for resident strangers; for you and not for women; for you and not for slaves. This teaches that in Egypt they did not form fellowship-groups with such people. "For a sign upon the houses where you are" - one might think he may place the blood on the place where he sleeps; therefore Scripture says "upon the houses where they shall eat it" (Exodus 12:7). One might think he places it only on the place of eating; therefore Scripture says "upon the houses where you are." One might think he places it here and there; therefore Scripture says "for a sign" and not "for signs." Say from now on: the place of eating was also where they slept. "And I will see the blood" - why do I need this? Is not everything revealed before Him? Rather, that he should place it only on the visible place [seen by all who pass]. "And I will pass over you" - were it not a verse already written, it would be impossible to say it. ["And I will pass over" - like a father who brings to his son. These are the words of Rabbi Eliezer. And the Sages say:] like a king who hurries his strides with his feet. "And there shall be no plague upon you" - this teaches that in Egypt there was a plague. "To destroy" - this teaches that in Egypt there was destruction. "When I strike the land of Egypt" - this teaches that in Egypt there was a striking. It teaches that the Egyptians were smitten [on that night] with three kinds of calamity: with plague, with destruction, and with striking.
