Speak to the Whole Congregation and Take a Lamb on the Tenth

Mekhilta DeRabbi Shimon Ben Yochai 12:3

"Speak to all the congregation of Israel" (Exodus 12:3): this teaches that this passage was said in a public assembly. "Saying": Rabbi Yehudah says: to attach a negative commandment to every positive commandment stated in the passage. "On the tenth of this month, and they shall take for themselves": this teaches that the Passover of Egypt was taken from the tenth. Might one think that the Passover of the generations should also be taken from the tenth? Scripture says "this": the Passover of Egypt was taken from the tenth, but the Passover of the generations was not taken from the tenth. I would exclude the first Passover [of the generations], but not exclude the second Passover; Scripture says, "And it shall be for you for keeping until the fourteenth day of this month" (Exodus 12:6): the first Passover is taken from the tenth, but the second Passover is not taken from the tenth. "And they shall take": this teaches that each and every one takes for himself. "And they shall take for themselves": this teaches that one individual takes on behalf of all the members of the company. From here they said: a man's agent is like himself. "And they shall take for themselves a man": from here they said there is no acquisition for a minor. "A lamb for a father's house": Might one think the Passover of Egypt was slaughtered only for fathers' houses? And from where do we know also for families? Scripture says, "Draw out and take for yourselves a flock for your families" (Exodus 12:21). From where do we know also for households? Scripture says "a lamb for a house." From here they said: a man slaughters on behalf of his minor son and daughter and on behalf of his Canaanite slave and maidservant, whether with their knowledge or without their knowledge.
