The Quail Rose at Evening and Covered the Camp Two Cubits High

"And it came to pass at evening that the quail came up" (Exodus 16:13). From here you learn that the meat was given to Israel with a darkened countenance. "And it covered the camp." I do not know how much; therefore Scripture says, "and about two cubits upon the face of the earth" (Numbers 11:31). It was two cubits high above the ground, so that a person standing would have it level with his heart and could take from it without trouble: from his heart downward, two cubits; from his heart upward, one cubit. And it says, "and he spread them out around the camp, about a day's journey on this side and about a day's journey on that side, round about the camp" (Numbers 11:31). Whatever befell them with the second quail befell them with the first quail; let the unexplained be learned from the explained.
