The True Judge Becomes a Partner in Creation

Mekhilta DeRabbi Shimon Ben Yochai 18:13

"And it came to pass on the next day" (Exodus 18:13): the day after the Day of Atonement. "And Moses sat to judge the people": as was his custom. "And the people stood before Moses from the morning until the evening." Now did Moses really sit from morning until evening judging Israel? Surely the courts sit only until the time of the meal! Rather, of everyone who judges a true judgment truthfully, Scripture accounts it as though he became a partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation. It is said here, "from morning until evening," and it is said there, "and it was evening and it was morning" (Genesis 1:5).
