Gershom and the Stranger in a Land of Idolaters

Mekhilta DeRabbi Shimon Ben Yochai 18:3

"And the two sons of his, of whom the name of the one was Gershom, for he said, 'I have been a stranger in a foreign land'" (Exodus 18:3). Rabbi Yehoshua says: It was a foreign land to me, certainly. Rabbi Elazar of Modi'in says: A foreign land, for the whole world worships idolatry, while I worship the One who spoke and the world came into being, as it is said (Psalms 50:1): "God, the LORD, has spoken and called the earth, from the rising of the sun to its setting."
