How Ha-Satan Watered Noah's Vineyard With Four Beasts

Midrash Aggadah, Genesis 9:21

"And he drank of the wine" (Genesis 9:21). Some say: on the same day he planted, on that same day he drank. (And sixteen [thirteen] occurrences of the letter waw are stated in this section, to teach you how harsh the drinking of wine is.) When Noah came to plant a vineyard, Ha-Satan came and said to him: Let my portion be in the vineyard together with you. Noah said to him: Yes. What did Ha-Satan do? He brought one lamb and slaughtered it and watered [the vine] with its blood; and afterward he brought a lion and slaughtered it and watered with its blood; and afterward he brought an ape and slaughtered it and watered with its blood; and afterward he brought a pig and slaughtered it and watered with its blood. He hinted to him this: When a person drinks one cup, he is like a lamb, mute. He drinks two cups, he is like a lion, and says, "I am mighty; what shall I do tomorrow with so-and-so and so-and-so." He drinks much wine, he begins to dance like an ape. He drinks far too much, he begins to vomit and soils his garments like a pig, which is filthy.
