All Things Come From the LORD and the Humble Heart

Midrash Mishlei 16:1

"To man belong the arrangements of the heart, but from the LORD comes the answer of the tongue" (Proverbs 16:1) - to inform you that everything is from the hand of the LORD and not from man: neither the thought of the heart nor the speech of the tongue, as it is said "and from the LORD comes the answer of the tongue." Another interpretation: "and from the LORD comes the answer of the tongue" - every person who pours out his supplication before the Holy One, blessed be He, He gives him an answer of the tongue. "All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirits" (Proverbs 16:2) - this is the fool, who makes himself wise in his own eyes, and he does not know that the LORD weighs the spirits. But one who casts the thoughts of his heart upon the Holy One, blessed be He, He sets his thoughts in order, as it is said (Proverbs 16:3): "Roll your deeds upon the LORD, and your thoughts will be established." "The LORD has made everything for His purpose" (Proverbs 16:4) - these are the doers of Torah; "and even the wicked for the day of evil" (Proverbs 16:4) - for if he does not repent, he is prepared for the judgment of Gehinnom. "Every haughty heart is an abomination to the LORD" (Proverbs 16:5) - this is one who raises his heart up before his Creator. "Hand to hand, he shall not go unpunished" (Proverbs 16:5) - he shall not be cleared from the judgment of Gehinnom. Rabbi Simon said: Every person who is lowly of spirit, and considers in his heart to walk in the ways of the Holy One, blessed be He, may be assured that He establishes his step, as it is said (Proverbs 16:9): "The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his step."
