Wilderness Miracles Renewed in Zion and Isaiah's Doubled Comfort

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Devarim 1:1

THESE ARE THE WORDS (Deuteronomy 1:1). May His name be blessed and His remembrance exalted; for all the miracles that He performed for Israel in the wilderness, so is He destined to perform in Zion. Concerning the wilderness it is written, THESE ARE THE WORDS (elleh ha-devarim); and concerning Zion it is written, I WILL MAKE DARKNESS INTO LIGHT BEFORE THEM AND CROOKED PLACES INTO LEVEL GROUND. THESE ARE THE THINGS (elleh ha-devarim) [I DID THEM AND DID NOT FORSAKE THEM] (Isaiah 42:16). Concerning the wilderness it is written, AND ALL THE PEOPLE SAW THE VOICES (Exodus 20:18); and concerning Zion it is written, THE VOICE OF JOY AND THE VOICE OF GLADNESS, THE VOICE OF THE BRIDEGROOM (and the voice of the bride) (Jeremiah 7:34). Concerning the wilderness it is written, THE EARTH QUAKED (Psalms 68:9); and concerning Zion [it is written], AND I WILL SHAKE THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH (Haggai 2:6). Concerning the wilderness it is written, AND THE LORD WENT BEFORE THEM BY DAY (Exodus 13:21); and concerning Zion it is written, FOR THE LORD GOES BEFORE YOU (Isaiah 52:12). Concerning the wilderness [it is written], FOR THE LORD WILL AGAIN REJOICE OVER YOU (Deuteronomy 30:9); and concerning Zion [it is written], AND I WILL REJOICE IN JERUSALEM AND BE GLAD IN MY PEOPLE (Isaiah 65:19). [THE WILDERNESS AND THE DRY LAND SHALL REJOICE (Isaiah 35:1).] What did Isaiah see to say thus? Rather, when Israel transgressed the Torah, Hosea arose and said, AND I WILL MAKE HER LIKE A WILDERNESS [AND SET HER LIKE A DRY LAND] (Hosea 2:5). Therefore Isaiah said, THE WILDERNESS AND THE DRY LAND SHALL REJOICE (Isaiah 35:1). And all the consolations that Isaiah spoke are double, because SHE HAS RECEIVED FROM THE HAND OF THE LORD DOUBLE FOR ALL HER SINS (Isaiah 40:2). Therefore Isaiah consoled her double: COMFORT, COMFORT (Isaiah 40:1); I, I (Isaiah 51:12); AWAKE, AWAKE (Isaiah 51:9); ROUSE YOURSELF, ROUSE YOURSELF (Isaiah 51:17); REJOICING I WILL REJOICE (Isaiah 61:10); IT SHALL SURELY BLOSSOM (Isaiah 35:2).
