Why the World Was Made with Half the Divine Name

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Vayikra 13:1

(Leviticus 5:1:) "AND IF A SOUL SINS, IN THAT IT HEARS THE VOICE OF ADJURATION, etc." This text is related to (Ecclesiastes 5:1:) "DO NOT BE RASH WITH YOUR MOUTH, AND LET NOT YOUR HEART HASTEN TO BRING FORTH A WORD BEFORE GOD." These are the sons of Adam who blaspheme the name of the Holy One, blessed be He. Come and see: when the upper beings and the lower beings were created, they were created with half of the Name, as it is said (Isaiah 26:4): "FOR THROUGH YAH, THE LORD, HE FORMED THE WORLDS." And why were they not created with all of it? Because they are not worthy to mention the full name of the Holy One, blessed be He. Woe to the creatures who blaspheme the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, for nothing! See what is written concerning the offerings (Leviticus 1:2): "A MAN, WHEN HE BRINGS FROM AMONG YOU AN OFFERING TO THE LORD." It does not say "to the Lord an offering," "to the Lord a burnt offering." Yet the sons of Adam blaspheme His name for nothing. Therefore it is said: "DO NOT BE RASH WITH YOUR MOUTH, etc. [FOR GOD IS IN HEAVEN AND YOU ARE UPON THE EARTH]." For who would say that God is not in heaven, and that the sons of Adam are not upon the earth? Rather, Solomon said: Whenever the weakest of the weak is from above, he overcomes the mighty one from below. Go out and learn from Abimelech (Judges 9:53): "AND A CERTAIN WOMAN CAST AN UPPER MILLSTONE [UPON ABIMELECH'S HEAD AND CRUSHED HIS SKULL]." And the mightiest of the mighty from above, how much the more so! See what is written concerning Him (Daniel 4:32): "AND ALL THE INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH ARE RECKONED AS NOTHING, [AND ACCORDING TO HIS WILL HE ACTS WITH THE HOST OF HEAVEN AND THE INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH]." And it is written (Psalms 47:3): "FOR THE LORD MOST HIGH IS AWESOME, A GREAT KING OVER ALL THE EARTH." But the sons of Adam are below. "THEREFORE LET YOUR WORDS BE FEW." And what is it for you to do? To place your hand upon your mouth and upon your ear, so as not to speak and not to hear. Therefore it says: "AND IF A SOUL SINS."
