Standing in the Field with First Fruits and a Heavenly Voice

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Ki Tavo 2:1

[(Deuteronomy 26:16:) "THIS DAY THE LORD YOUR GOD COMMANDS YOU TO PERFORM, etc."] What is written above on this matter? (Deuteronomy 26:15:) "Look down from Your holy dwelling, etc." R. Abbahu said in the name of R. Jose bar Hanina: How much gratification they receive, and how those who perform the commandments are given an opening to speak! A person has business before the government; sometimes he gives a great deal of money until they bring him to the king. Once he has reached the king, it is doubtful whether he fulfills his request or doubtful whether he does not fulfill his request. But the Holy One, blessed be He, is not so. Rather, a person goes down into his field, sees a cluster of grapes that has ripened first, a fig that has ripened first, a pomegranate that has ripened first; he places it in the basket, stands in the middle of the field, and asks for mercy for himself, and for Israel, and for the Land of Israel, as it is said, "Look down from Your holy dwelling, from the heavens, etc." And not only that, but he would say: I will not move from here until You do my needs this day, as it is written after it (Deuteronomy 26:16): "This day the LORD your God commands you to perform, etc." Resh Lakish said: A heavenly voice (bat kol) goes forth and says: May you repeat it in the coming year as on this day, like a person who gives fresh fruit to his fellow and says, "May it be Your will that you repeat it and give me again in the coming year."
