Seven Things the Lord Hates Mapped onto the Sotah

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Nasso 3:1

[ANY MAN WHOSE WIFE GOES ASTRAY.] This is what Scripture says (Proverbs 6:16): "There are six things the Lord hates, [and seven are an abomination to His soul]." Rabbi Yose the Galilean says: seven behaviors are spoken of regarding the sotah (the woman gone astray). (Proverbs 6:17:) "Haughty eyes" — for the woman who has gone astray casts her eyes toward another man; and thus it says (Isaiah 3:16): "Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks and roving eyes." "A lying tongue" (Proverbs 6:17) — for she commits adultery with another man and becomes pregnant from him, and she lies and says to her husband, "I am pregnant from you." "And hands that shed innocent blood" (Proverbs 6:17) — for the adulterer enters on the condition that, if he is caught, he will kill or be killed. "A heart that devises wicked schemes" (Proverbs 6:18) — for the adulterer and the adulteress, their thoughts at every hour are nothing but wickedness: when will they sin, and they say to one another, "In which place, at which hour?" "Feet that hasten to run to evil" (Proverbs 6:18) — for they surely hasten to commit the sin. "A false witness who breathes out lies" (Proverbs 6:19) — for if they are caught, they deceive and lie, and they swear and say, "We were conversing about other matters." "And one who sends forth strife among brothers" (Proverbs 6:19) — for all Israel are brothers, and as for the one who commits adultery with the wife of his fellow, her husband hears of it and hates him, and this one cannot bear to look at him. Behold: "and one who sends forth strife among brothers." Thus there are seven grievous things that [the sotah] does.
