R. Berekhyah on Feeding the Evil Inclination Bread of Torah

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Beshalach 3:2

R. Berekhyah applies to it (Proverbs 25:21): "If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat, etc." This is the evil inclination. Feed him from the bread of the Torah, just as it says (Proverbs 9:5): "Come, eat of my bread." "And if he is thirsty, give him water to drink" (Proverbs 25:21) — from the waters of the Torah, just as it says (Isaiah 55:1): "Ho, every one that thirsts, come to the waters." For what reason? "For you will heap coals of fire upon his head, etc." (Proverbs 25:22). Therefore (Proverbs 16:7): "When the LORD is pleased with a man's ways" — this is the good inclination; "He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him" — this is the evil inclination. David said (Psalms 35:10): "All my bones shall say: LORD, who is like You, who delivers the poor from him that is too strong for him" — the good inclination from the evil inclination.
