Why Authority Fled Saul and Chased Abimelech in Tanchuma

Midrash Tanchuma Buber, Vayikra 4:1

(Lev. 1:1:) AND HE CALLED UNTO MOSES. This is what the Scripture said (Prov. 29:23): A MAN'S PRIDE SHALL BRING HIM LOW, BUT THE HUMBLE IN SPIRIT SHALL UPHOLD HONOR. Everyone who flees from authority, authority pursues him. Saul fled from authority at the time he came to reign, as it is said (1 Sam. 10:22): AND THEY INQUIRED OF THE LORD FURTHER, HAS THE MAN COME [HITHER] YET? AND THE LORD SAID, BEHOLD, HE HAS HIDDEN HIMSELF AMONG THE VESSELS. What is this? When they came and told him the matter of the kingship, he said to them: I am not worthy of the kingship; rather, inquire by the Urim and Thummim whether I am worthy, and if not, leave me alone. Immediately, AND THEY INQUIRED OF THE LORD FURTHER. Immediately he hid himself until they inquired of the Urim and Thummim. AND THE LORD SAID, BEHOLD, HE HAS HIDDEN HIMSELF AMONG THE VESSELS. Thus our Rabbis taught: these vessels are the Urim and Thummim. This one fled from authority, and it pursued him, as it is said (1 Sam. 10:24): DO YOU SEE HIM WHOM THE LORD HAS CHOSEN, THAT THERE IS NONE LIKE HIM AMONG ALL THE PEOPLE? But Abimelech son of Jerubbaal pursued authority, and it fled from him, as it is said (Judg. 9:1-2): AND ABIMELECH SON OF JERUBBAAL WENT TO SHECHEM, etc., SPEAK, I PRAY YOU, IN THE EARS OF ALL THE MEN OF SHECHEM, etc.; (Judg. 9:23): AND [GOD] SENT AN EVIL SPIRIT BETWEEN ABIMELECH, etc.
