The Silver Turned to Dross and the Wine Cut With Water

Pesikta DeRav Kahana 15:8

"Your silver has become dross, your wine is mixed with water" (Isaiah 1:22). At first they used to deal with coins of silver, but when the cheats multiplied, they began to deal with coins of copper plated with silver. And one of these cheats would go to the silversmith, and the smith would be heard saying to his household servant, "Coppered it for him." That same man would also go to buy a measure of wine from the tavern keeper, and would hear him saying to his household servant, "Dilute it for him." This is what is written, "Your silver has become dross" (Isaiah 1:22). Why? "Your wine is mixed with water" (ibid.).
