The Heart as the Seat of Everything in Jewish Thought

Pesikta DeRav Kahana 16:2

[2] "I spoke with my heart, saying, Behold, I have grown great and increased in wisdom, [and the rest]" (Ecclesiastes 1:16). From here they said: the heart sees, the heart hears, the heart speaks, the heart knows, the heart stands, the heart falls, the heart walks, the heart cries out, the heart rejoices, the heart is comforted. The heart sees, "and my heart saw much wisdom and knowledge" (ibid.). The heart speaks, "And I spoke with my heart" (ibid.). The heart knows, "the heart knows the bitterness of its soul" (Proverbs 14:10). The heart hears, "Give to Your servant a hearing heart" (1 Kings 3:9). The heart stands, "Can your heart stand, or can your hands be strong" (Ezekiel 22:14). The heart falls, "Let no man's heart fall upon him" (1 Samuel 17:32). The heart walks, "And he said to him, Did not my heart go" (2 Kings 5:26). The heart cries out, "their heart cried out to the LORD" (Lamentations 2:18). The heart rejoices, "therefore my heart rejoiced and my glory exulted" (Psalms 16:9). The heart is comforted, "Comfort, comfort My people, says your God; speak to the heart of Jerusalem" (Isaiah 40:1, 2).
