The Eye-Paint Walls and Unbreakable Sapphire Foundations

Pesikta DeRav Kahana 18:4

"Behold, I will set your stones in fair colors" (Isaiah 54:11), like this eye-paint, as it says, "and she painted her eyes" (2 Kings 9:30). And three things were said about eye-paint: it makes the hair of the eyelids grow, it stops tears, and it makes one beloved as a king's daughter [enhances beauty]. "And I will lay your foundations with sapphires" (Isaiah 54:11), with sapphire stones. Rabbi Yudan and Rabbi Pinchas. Rabbi Yudan said: Every single decree that is destined to be issued in Jerusalem will be as beautiful as this sapphire. Rabbi Pinchas said: Would you say that this sapphire is soft? There was an incident with a man who went down to Rome to sell a sapphire. The buyer said to him, "On condition that I may test it." He said to him, "On that condition, yes." What did the buyer do? He took it and placed it on the anvil and struck it with a hammer. The anvil split, the hammer broke in two, and the sapphire was not diminished at all.
