He Cleanses the Penitent and the Four Storied Chambers

Pesikta DeRav Kahana 25:3

Yet He does not entirely acquit (Numbers 14:18). He cleanses those who repent and does not cleanse those who do not repent; He cleanses in this world but does not cleanse for the world to come. Visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and upon the children's children, to the third and to the fourth generation (Numbers 14:18): like four stories, one above the other, one above the other, in this one wine and in this one oil, in this one honey and in this one water. If a fire breaks out in one of them, they put one another out; but if they were all of oil, they all burn up. So too, when they hold fast to the deeds of their fathers, generation after generation after generation, they are judged on their account. But if they were interwoven, one generation righteous and one generation wicked, then, Fathers shall not be put to death for children, and children shall not be put to death for fathers (Deuteronomy 24:16). In that hour Moses rejoiced and said, There is no cutter-down son of a cutter-down in Israel.
