The List of Conquered Kings Written Like a Song

Yalkut Shimoni on Nach 22:6

"The king of Jericho, one" (Joshua 12:9). Rabbi Ze'ira and Rabbi Yirmiyah in the name of Rav: The Song of the Sea and the Song of Deborah are written as a half-brick over a whole brick and a whole brick over a half-brick. But the ten sons of Haman and the kings of Canaan are written as a half-brick over a half-brick and a whole brick over a whole brick. What is the law — is this manner of writing required as a precept, or does its absence invalidate? Rabbi Yosei bar Chanina, the son of the brother of Rabbi Oshaya, said: Do you remember when we stood before the shop of Rabbi Oshaya, your beloved, and Rabbi Abba bar Zavda passed by, and we asked him, and he said in the name of Rav: its absence invalidates? Rabbi Chiyya the son of Rabbi Acha of Jaffa, and Rabbi Yirmiyah in the name of Rabbi Ze'ira: one must recite it in a single breath. And the ten sons of Haman are with them.
