"By the word of the LORD they gave him the city" (Joshua 19:50). The land of Israel was divided only by lot, as it is said, "only by lot" (Numbers 26:55). [But] Joshua and Caleb did not take their portion by lot; rather, "by the word of the LORD they gave him the city that he asked, Timnath-serah" (Joshua 19:50). It is written "serah" and it is written "heres" (Judges 2:9). Rabbi Eleazar said: At first its fruits resembled earthenware [heres, hard and poor], and in the end its fruits would rot [masrihin] from the abundance of their richness. And if you wish, say the reverse: at first they would rot from the abundance of their richness, and in the end they resembled earthenware.
