"In my grave which I dug for myself" (Genesis 50:5). Rabbi said: when I went to the coastal cities, they used to call selling (mekhirah) by the word kirah. "And Joseph went up to bury his father" (Genesis 50:7). Joseph merited to bury his father, and none among his brothers was greater than he, as it is said, "And Joseph went up to bury his father." And who is greater for us than Joseph, with whom none busied himself but Moses? Why is it different at first, where it is written "And Joseph went up," and then "and all the house of Joseph and his brothers and his father's house," and different at the end, where it is written "And Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers and all who went up with him"? Rabbi Yochanan said: at first, before they saw the honor of Israel, they did not treat them with honor; but at the end, when they saw the honor of Israel, they treated them with honor, as it is said, "And they came to the threshing floor of Atad" (verse 10). And is there a threshing floor for thornbushes (atad)? Rabbi Abbahu said: this teaches that they surrounded Jacob's coffin with crowns like a threshing floor surrounded by a hedge of thorns, for the sons of Ishmael and the sons of Esau and the sons of Keturah came for war. And when they saw Joseph's crown hung upon Jacob's coffin, they all took their crowns and hung them upon Jacob's coffin. It was taught: thirty-six crowns were hung upon Jacob's coffin. "And they mourned there a great and very grievous mourning" - both these and those. Rabbi Eliezer says: they loosened the girdles of their loins and gave honor to Jacob. Rabbi Shmuel said: they untied the knots of their shoulders. And the Rabbis said: with a finger they pointed to his coffin and said, "This is a grievous mourning for Egypt." Therefore the Holy One, blessed be He, gave them a threshing floor. "And he made for his father a mourning of seven days." And from where do we know that mourning is seven days? As it is written, "And from the entrance of the tent of meeting you shall not go out for seven days" (Leviticus 8:33). And why seven days? Corresponding to the seven days of feasting. "In equal measure as it comes, so shall it go" - he said to them: in this world you grieved with the righteous one and made for him a mourning of seven days; in the world to come I will turn that mourning into joy, as it is said, "And I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow" (Jeremiah 31:12).
