"And Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead" (Genesis 50:15). What did they see? All the days that Jacob was alive, he would dine with them, and they would eat at his table. But once Jacob died, they did not eat at his table. They said: there is evil hidden in Joseph's heart, and he will surely repay us, and so on. "And they sent word to Joseph" (Genesis 50:16). To whom did they send word? To Bilhah. "Please, forgive" (verse 17). The Holy One, blessed be He, said: you spoke with the word "please" (ana); in the future the High Priest will enter the Holy of Holies and plead in defense of your children with this very word, "Please, O Name (ana ha-Shem)." "And now please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father" - his God is living. "And Joseph wept" - because they had suspected him.
Joseph's Brothers Fear His Revenge and the Word That Foretold Yom Kippur
