Blotting Out Amalek Root and Branch

Yalkut Shimoni on Torah 266:2

Another interpretation: "Blot out" - him and all his offspring (and all his generations). "I will blot out" - him and all his family. These are the words of Rabbi Joshua. Rabbi Eleazar of Modi'in says: "remembrance" refers to Agag; "Amalek" according to its plain meaning; "blot out" - him and all his offspring; "I will blot out" - him and all that generation. "From under the heavens" - that there shall be no descendant or grandchild to Amalek under the heavens. Rabbi Joshua says: when Amalek came to harm Israel from beneath the wings of their Father in heaven, Moses said: Master of the universe, here this wicked one comes to destroy Your children from beneath Your wings - the scroll of Torah that You will give them, who will read it? Rabbi Eliezer says: when Amalek came to harm Israel from beneath the wings of their Father in heaven, Moses said before the Holy One, blessed be He: Master of the universe, Your children whom You are destined to scatter to the four winds of heaven, as it is said, "For like the four winds of heaven I have spread you abroad" (Zechariah 2:10) - this wicked one comes to destroy them from beneath Your wings; the scroll of Torah that You will give Your children, who will read it? Rabbi Eliezer says: when will their name be destroyed? At the hour when idolatry and its worshipers are uprooted, and the Holy One, blessed be He, will be alone in the world, and His kingship will be forever and ever. In that hour, "And the LORD will go forth and fight" (Zechariah 14:3), and "And the LORD shall be King" (Zechariah 14:9), and it says, "You will pursue them in anger and destroy them" (Lamentations 3:66). Rabbi Nathan says: Haman came only as a reminder for the generations, as it is said, "And these days of Purim" (Esther 9:28).
