"Six years you shall sow [your land]" and so forth (Exodus 23:10). Rabbi Ishmael says: When Israel does the will of the Omnipresent, they observe one sabbatical year within a single seven-year cycle, as it is said, "Six years you shall sow" and so forth. But when they do not do the will of the Omnipresent, they end up observing four sabbatical years within a single seven-year cycle. How so? He plows it one year and sows it the next, plows it one year and sows it the next, with the result that they observe four sabbatical years within one cycle [because the land lies fallow for half of those years]. "And you shall gather in its produce" (Exodus 23:10) comes to include the produce of the eve of the seventh year that carried over into the seventh year. From this I know only about produce of the eve of the seventh year that entered the seventh year. From where do I learn that produce of the seventh year which carried over into the year following the seventh year should be treated like seventh-year produce? Scripture teaches, "So shall you do with your vineyard and with your olive grove" (Exodus 23:11). You may therefore derive a governing principle from the two of them together: the case of the olive is not like the case of the vineyard, and the case of the vineyard is not like the case of the olive; but what is common to both is that whatever grows into the time following the seventh year is treated like seventh-year produce, and so forth. These are the words of Rabbi Yoshiyah. Rabbi Yonatan says: That derivation is not needed. Has it not already been said, "and what they leave the beast of the field shall eat" (Exodus 23:11), to bring in seventh-year produce that carried over into the year following the seventh year, that it is like seventh-year produce? Then what does Scripture teach by "So shall you do with your vineyard and with your olive grove"? It comes to assign a separate time of removal for the olive on its own and for the vineyard on its own.
