Moses Grasping the Holy One Like a Man Holding a Friend

Yalkut Shimoni on Torah 392:1

"And now, let Me be" (Exodus 32:10). Rabbi Elazar said: Were this verse not written, it would be impossible to say it. It teaches that Moses seized the Holy One, blessed be He, like a man who seizes his fellow by his garment, and he said before Him, "Master of the universe, I will not let You go until You pardon and forgive them." "And I will make of you a great nation" (Exodus 32:10). Rabbi Elazar said: Moses said before the Holy One, blessed be He, "Master of the universe, if a chair of three legs cannot stand before You in the hour of Your anger, how shall a chair of one leg stand? And not only that, but I am ashamed before my ancestors. Now they will say, See the leader who stood over them: he sought greatness for himself and did not seek mercy for them."
