Jacob Told Laban Fourteen Years Is Enough

After fourteen years for two wives, Jacob demanded his freedom. Laban had one more scheme ready. And the spotted sheep had other ideas.

Fourteen years. That is what Jacob gave Laban for the right to marry his daughters. Seven years for Rachel, and when the morning came, it was Leah. So seven more years for Rachel, starting immediately, this time paid in advance, on trust, because that was the only currency Jacob had left. Fourteen years of his life, given to a man who had never dealt with him honestly for a single day of it.

When those fourteen years ended, Jacob stood before Laban and said: I have completed the years. Let me go home to my father. This was not a request. It was an accounting. He had met every obligation. He was stating a fact and drawing a conclusion from it: the debt is settled, I am leaving.

Laban had no legal ground to keep him. So he did what he always did. He made an offer. Stay and work, he said, and I will pay you wages this time. Name your price. Jacob named it: give me the spotted and speckled and black among the sheep and the goats, and those will be my wages. Everything unmarked goes to you. The terms were generous to Laban and almost uncomfortably honest from Jacob, who told him plainly: if you ever find a plain animal in my flock, you will know I stole it, because I only take what we agreed on.

The Book of Jubilees records what happened next without editorializing, because it does not need to. The sheep brought forth spotted and speckled and variously marked. Then they brought forth lambs that looked like themselves. The spotted bred spotted. The marked bred marked. Jacob's flock multiplied and Laban's stayed thin, and no matter how many times Laban changed the terms, the animals did not comply.

A rabbinic reading preserved in midrashic commentary on Genesis notes the dark irony that Laban had created for himself. Jacob had said: my honesty will speak for me on a future day. But Rabbi Yehuda bar Simon, reading that line, adds a comment that cuts. He quotes Proverbs 27: do not glory in a future day. You said your honesty would vindicate you in the future, the rabbi says to Jacob, but look what happened in the meantime: your daughter Dinah went out, and she was violated. The claim that God's justice would eventually speak was true. It was also expensive. The future day comes, but the waiting is not free.

Jacob did not know any of this yet. He was watching his flock multiply and calculating how many more seasons he needed before he could leave. He had already decided to go. God had appeared to him in a dream and told him to return to the land of his birth, and he had told Rachel and Leah in the field, not in the house, because the fields had no ears belonging to their father. The women listened and said: do we have any portion in our father's house? He has sold us. He has used up the money he got for us. Whatever God says to you, do it. They were done too.

What the Jubilees account of these twenty years shows is not just Laban's greed but Jacob's endurance. He had been in Mesopotamia for two decades. He had built a household, raised twelve children, survived every trap Laban set. He was leaving not because he had won but because he had lasted. There is a kind of victory that looks nothing like winning and everything like still being there when the other person has run out of moves.

Jacob loaded his family and his livestock and left while Laban was away shearing his sheep. He got three days' head start. God gave Laban a warning dream and Laban arrived in the mountains of Gilead with his relatives, furious, and found nothing he could take back. Jacob said: tell me what I did wrong. Tell me what sin I committed. Laban could not name one. They piled stones and made a covenant and parted. Laban called the heap of stones one name. Jacob called it another. Two men, two languages, one pile of stones at the edge of where their lives had overlapped for twenty years.

Laban turned back toward Mesopotamia. Jacob turned back toward his father. He had arrived in Laban's household with a stone for a pillow and a God he was only beginning to trust. He left with two wives, two handmaids, twelve children, and flocks that had multiplied despite every scheme thrown against them. Fourteen years of wages, finally paid in full. Six more years for the flocks, also settled. The stones stood on the mountain as a witness. Nobody was supposed to cross that line to do harm.

Jacob kept going. The road home was waiting, and so was his brother.
