The Encompassing Light Coupled Itself Into Creation
Ramchal said God's infinite light surrounded a residue, then coupled with it, so creation could finally hold the radiance it was made to reveal.

Most people think Kabbalah talks about light because light sounds pretty. Ramchal (Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, 1707-1746) thought light was the only honest way to describe what God was actually doing. He wrote Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah, the "138 Openings of Wisdom," in Padua and Amsterdam in the 1730s, trying to organize the Lurianic system the way a watchmaker organizes a movement. Every gear had to turn the right way. Every claim had to lock into the next.
And the claim he kept returning to was almost embarrassing in its simplicity. The whole machine, every world, every soul, every dawn, exists for one reason. God wants to be seen.
The light that refused to stand far off
Start with the puzzle Ramchal opened the system with. If God is infinite, how does anything else fit? The Ari had already given the answer: tzimtzum, a contraction, a withdrawal. God pulled back, and into the vacated space left a faint trace. The Lurianic tradition called that trace the reshimu, the Residue.
Ramchal could have left it there. Most teachers did. The Residue sat in the empty space, the Infinite stood politely outside, and creation began somewhere in between.
He refused. In Opening 28, he insisted on something stranger. The Encompassing Light, the Or Makif, does not stand at a distance from the Residue. If it did, it could not produce the Residue at all. A cause holds its effect inside itself. So the surrounding light wraps the leftover trace the way a parent wraps a sleeping child. Close enough to feel breath.
That is the first move. The light does not abandon the vessel. It surrounds it, includes its power, and waits.
Why the Holy One built a body for His government
So what is the light waiting for?
Ramchal answered in Opening 37, and the answer is staggering when you read it slowly. The entire governmental order of the Supreme Mind, every Sefirah, every Partzuf, every law of nature, every quirk in the human body, is aimed at one thing. Revealing the perfect light of God so that boundless goodness can extend to everyone.
Then he goes further. Humanity is not a side effect of that revelation. Humanity is the revelation. "He made man, and so too all the other creatures after him, in such a way that man in all his different parts alludes to all the different kinds of ways in which the Holy One, blessed be He, governs His creations."
Read that again. The fingers know something. The lungs know something. The grief in the chest at a funeral knows something. Each part of the body, each layer of the soul, encodes a mode of divine governance. You are not a witness to the system. You are a working diagram of it.
The Ramchal trained as a poet before he trained as a kabbalist, and you can hear the poet here. He wanted his readers to feel the dignity of their own anatomy. The God who made you wrote His operating manual into your bones.
The vessel was always meant to be filled
There is still a gap, though, between the surrounding light and the body that is supposed to receive it. A vessel without light is empty. A light without a vessel has nowhere to land. Ramchal needed a mechanism that closes the distance, and he found it in the most intimate metaphor the tradition had.
Coupling.
Zivug, in Kabbalistic language, names the union of two divine configurations, the Male MaH and the Female BaN. In Opening 66, Ramchal said the repair, ongoing creation, of every aspect of reality hinges on this mystery. Coupling, pregnancy, birth. A cosmic choreography in which giving and receiving flow into one another until everything the new light will need is gathered, whole, in the womb of the Female.
Nothing has to be added. Nothing has to be cut. The potential is complete.
Then comes a stretch of hiddenness. Ramchal called it the period when the offspring is concealed in the light that feeds it. The new Partzuf cannot show its face yet, because its small lights still need to be perfected by the larger lights of the mother in which it is being formed. The whole system, he said, is interdependence. One light only finishes another.
Birth, and the suckling that follows
Then the moment arrives. Every detail is visible, though each detail still carries only a minimum of light. The offspring is revealed on its own. No further differentiation is possible. Nothing new can be added to the structure. But the light inside the structure can grow brighter, and Ramchal had a name for that next stage too. Yenikah, suckling. The mental and spiritual energies pour in after birth, and the new being keeps gaining radiance long after it has already become itself.
This is why Ramchal called the emergence from the higher luminary "birth." Not a metaphor, not a sentimental flourish. The technical term for how potential becomes manifest reality. Every world is born this way. Every soul. Every act of tikkun a person undertakes in a kitchen, a synagogue, a hospital corridor.
What the diagram does to a reader
Stack the three openings together and a single picture surfaces. The Encompassing Light surrounds the Residue. The Residue is shaped into a vessel that mirrors divine governance. The Male and Female configurations couple inside that vessel, gestate a new light, and birth it into a world that can finally hold it.
It sounds like cosmology. Ramchal meant it as anatomy. Your own.
He was writing in the 1730s under censure from Venetian rabbis who suspected him of messianic ambition, in exile in Amsterdam, eventually in Akko, where he died of plague before he turned forty. He had every reason to write a Kabbalah of distance, a God who stayed safely far off and could not be blamed for the suffering of His students. He wrote the opposite. He wrote a God who could not bear to stand far from the vessel He had made, who coupled with creation rather than presiding over it, whose entire purpose was to be seen by the very people His withdrawal had made room for.
The Encompassing Light is still wrapped around the Residue. The coupling is still happening. The question Ramchal kept asking, opening after opening, was whether the vessel knows it is being filled.
