We read in the biblical books of Kings and Chronicles that he led the people astray, embracing idolatry and other abominations. But his son, Amon, well, he took things to a whole new level.
According to Legends of the Jews, Ginzberg's masterful retelling of rabbinic tradition, Amon was even more wicked than his father. And what's truly chilling is the reason behind his wickedness. He had a twisted philosophy: "My father was a sinner from early childhood, and in his old age he did penance. I shall do the same. First I shall satisfy the desires of my heart, and afterward I shall return to God."
Can you imagine? The sheer arrogance of thinking you can control your own spiritual destiny like that? The idea that you can indulge in sin, then simply wipe the slate clean with repentance, or teshuvah? It's a dangerous game, and one that Amon played with reckless abandon.
The text tells us he burned the Torah, the sacred scroll containing God's law. He allowed the Beit HaMikdash, the Holy Temple, to fall into disrepair – the altar, the very heart of worship, became covered in spiderwebs. And, in an act of utter depravity, he committed incest, a transgression even more heinous than the similar sin committed by his father.
He was, it seems, determined to push the boundaries of transgression, to see just how far he could go. He was, as the text says, executing the first half of his maxim literally. But what about the second half? What about repentance?
Tragically, Amon never got the chance. Death, the ultimate reckoning, intervened. There was no grand repentance, no dramatic return to God. He was cut off "in the fulness of his sinful ways."
His story leaves us with a haunting question: Is there a point of no return? Can we truly presume upon divine grace, believing we can always repent later? Or does sin, unchecked, ultimately consume us, leaving us no time for teshuvah? Amon's life serves as a stark warning. It's a reminder that the path to repentance is not a guarantee, and that the consequences of our actions can have eternal ramifications.
