The robe of the high priest rang when he walked. The Targum Pseudo-Jonathan on Exodus 28:34 gives a specific count: a golden bell, then a pomegranate of hyacinth and crimson, alternating around the hem β€” their number, seventy and one.

The number is not accidental. The Sages taught that it matched the seventy nations of the world plus Israel β€” seventy-one voices, one chime each, ringing as Aaron moved. Every step the high priest took was audible to every people. The rabbis of the Sanhedrin would later sit in a court of seventy-one judges, and the number on the hem of the robe anticipated that courtroom by a thousand years.

The pomegranates mattered too. A ripe pomegranate is said to hold the same number of seeds as the Torah holds mitzvot β€” six hundred and thirteen. Dangling a pomegranate at the edge of the robe meant the whole Torah swung beside the bell at every step. Sound and silence, command and announcement, took turns around the hem.

The takeaway is that a priest does not move quietly. Seventy-one bells announce his arrival; seventy-one pomegranates announce his obligation. Both are heard. Both are counted.
