Cloud for Israel and Darkness for Egypt at the Sea

Mekhilta DeRabbi Shimon Ben Yochai 14:18

"And it came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel" (Exodus 14:20) -- as in the matter that is said, And he stood between the dead and the living (Numbers 17:13). "And there was the cloud and the darkness." The cloud was for Israel and the darkness for the Egyptians. You find that whoever is set in darkness sees one who dwells in light. The Egyptians were set in darkness and saw Israel, who dwelt in light, eating and drinking and rejoicing. They would hurl at them arrows and ballista stones, but the angel and the cloud received them, as it is said, Fear not, Abram, I am a shield to you (Genesis 15:1). And it says, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge (2 Samuel 22:3). And it says, The word of God is refined; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him (2 Samuel 22:31). "And the one did not come near the other all night." The Egyptian who was standing could not sit, the one sitting could not stand, the one laden could not unload, the one unladen could not load; and he groped in darkness, as it is said, And one shall feel the darkness (Exodus 10:21). Another interpretation: "And the one did not come near the other" -- the camp of Egypt did not come near into the camp of Israel, nor the camp of Israel into the camp of Egypt.
