First Fruits and the Threefold Warning of the Kid in Milk

Mekhilta DeRabbi Shimon Ben Yochai 34:15

"The first of the first fruits of your land" (Exodus 34:26). "First" is stated here, and "first" is stated elsewhere (Deuteronomy 26:2). Just as there it means the seven species, so here it means the seven species. "Your land" - this excludes the produce of a sharecropper and of a robber. "You shall bring to the house of the LORD your God" - this teaches that one is obligated to take care of them until he brings them to the chosen House. "You shall not cook a kid in its mother's milk" (Exodus 34:26). This comes to forbid cooking it; how much more so eating it. I have only a kid and its mother's milk; how do I know about an ox in milk? Scripture teaches "You shall not cook... in milk." Rabbi Isaac said: In three places it is written "You shall not cook a kid in its mother's milk" - one for its own matter, one for the matter of Torah, and one for the matter of tithes. For its own matter, what is written? "The first of the first fruits of your land" (Exodus 23:19), and after it is written "Behold, I send an angel before you" (Exodus 23:20). For the matter of Torah, what is written? "The first of the glory of your land," and after it is written "And the LORD said to Moses, Write down for yourself..." The Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moses: While the sandal is on your foot, crush the thorn - meaning, from "You shall not cook a kid in its mother's milk," write it down for yourself, and so on. For the matter of tithes, "You shall not cook a kid in its mother's milk" (Deuteronomy 14:21), and adjacent to it "You shall surely tithe" (Deuteronomy 14:22). He said to them: Do not cause Me to cook kids in their mothers' wombs, for if you do not occupy yourselves with Torah and bring out your tithes properly, I bring out one east wind and scorch them, as it is written "and blasted before it was grown up" (II Kings 19:26).
